UAE Domestic Worker Visa Process: Step-by-Step Guide

Overview of the Domestic Worker Visa

The UAE domestic worker visa (also called a housemaid visa) allows foreign nationals to work legally as domestic workers in the UAE. The process is regulated by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) and MOHRE.

Step 1: Employer Pre-Approval

The employer must first obtain pre-approval from MOHRE. This requires: Emirates ID, passport copy, salary proof (minimum AED 6,000/month), and a completed application form. The approval typically takes 2-3 business days.

Step 2: Tadbeer Center Application

Once pre-approved, the employer works with a licensed Tadbeer center like AbiWorkers. The center submits the formal visa application and handles all government transactions.

Step 3: Entry Permit Issuance

The Federal Authority issues an entry permit (employment visa) valid for 60 days. This allows the worker to enter the UAE. If the worker is already in the UAE on a visit visa, a status change may be required.

Step 4: Medical Fitness Test

Within 30 days of arrival, the worker must undergo a medical fitness test at an approved medical center. This includes blood tests (HIV, Hepatitis B & C, TB, Leprosy) and a chest X-ray. The test costs approximately AED 320.

Step 5: Emirates ID Application

After passing the medical, the worker applies for an Emirates ID at an ICA typing center. Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are captured. The ID is typically issued within 7-10 days.

Step 6: Residence Visa Stamping

The final step is stamping the residence visa in the worker's passport. This involves submitting the passport, Emirates ID, medical certificate, and visa application to the ICA. The stamped visa is valid for 2 years.

Total Timeline

The entire process takes approximately 3-4 weeks from entry permit to visa stamping, assuming all documents are complete and the medical test passes on the first attempt.

Costs Breakdown

Visa application fee: AED 300 | Medical test: AED 320 | Emirates ID: AED 370 (2-year) | Typing services: AED 200 | Tadbeer center fee: Varies by agency

Important Notes

The worker cannot start employment until the medical test is passed and the Emirates ID is issued. Working without a valid visa is illegal and can result in deportation and bans.
